Growing Up

By Kiran Dhillon
Growing up is achieving
Growing up is believing
Growing up is learning things
Growing up is like flying with wings

Growing up is getting older
Growing up is getting bolder
Growing up makes you think
Growing up is like spilling ink

Growing up is meeting new friends
Growing up is fixing all bends

Growing Up (For Girls)

By Kira King
Growing up is hard,
It’s like a birthday card,
Different ages,
Like turning pages.
These are the changes.
Growing up is hard.

Liking boys,
Playing with toys,
Thinking of things,
Hoping for rings,
Growing up is hard.

Getting lost,
Like a worm finding its way through a compost,
Annoying sisters,
Meeting misters.
Growing up is hard.

Mixed hormones,
Ringing friends telephones,
Growing up is hard.

You’ve got the rest of your life ahead of you,
So enjoy this poem with your friends too.

What is growing up?

By Asha Dhillon
Growing up is part of life. Gradually as time passes everyone grows up. First you are born and can barely open your eyes. Then you grow in to a toddler and crawl then begin to walk. Then you are able to speak only a few words such as mummy and daddy. Then at the age of five you start your primary school learning something new every day.

Then at the age of 11 or 12 you start your senior school the work gets harder and harder. Then later you have to go to a college or a university and study to get a job. You have to graduate and then you will get a job. Then at the age of 65 you can finally retire and look back on your hard work.

Remembrance Day

By Ryan Peters
Once again it’s that time of year
Where we pay respect to those who knew no fear
They came in their thousands and fought all year
And when some were shot down more would appear
Rest in Peace to all who died
We look up to them and hold great pride
So buy a poppy to show you care
For all they’ve done when fighting out there.

That day

By Simra Sekhon
That day was one the most horrific days I have ever had so horrific that I can’t even mention the date. I have finally found the courage to write it down after 30 years. One day I was just doing homework at home and I heard a scream from upstairs. I was petrified.
 ‘’Help! Help!’’ mum screamed.
Someone had broken into the house. I went upstairs to see I saw a 6ft man with spiky hair. He was holding a knife against her neck. I screamed.
There was no one else home so ran to our neighbours - Mr and Mrs Baxter. They were in their 30’s. He started running after me but he was really slow. I just managed to reach the house next door. I told them what had happened but it was too late. He was standing in front of us. I was so terrified that my whole body started shaking.  Mr Baxter bravely picked up the phone and dialled 999 but the man just grabbed the phone and banged it to the floor into tiny pieces. All of us got really terrified but I just realised that I had my mobile phone in my pocket all along. So I asked the scary man if I could go to the toilet.
“Are you desperate?”
 “Yes” I said timidly.
“Fine, but hurry up!’’
Then I went to the bathroom and dialled 999. I got through to the police and said, “Please come to 67 Rain Street as quickly as possible. Someone is holding me and my neighbours hostage.”
When I came back the man took all our valuable possessions. I gave in my phone because the job was already done.  I whispered in Mr Baxter’s ear “I’ve phoned the police”. 10 minutes later the police arrived and the man got arrested. It turned out that he was wanted for burglary…

Lily’s birthday surprise!

By Kira King
Normal stories and fairy tales would normally start with once upon a time or once there was a little boy; something like that any way. This is different this goes straight into a conversation but not just any random conversation it’s an argument, between a brother and a sister.
And this is how it goes:
“NO it’s your entire fault!”    (Julie)
“NO it’s yours!”     (Josh)
“I HATE YOU!”
“I HATE YOU TOO”
“Oi you two what the hell are you arguing about!?”
“Oh nothing sis, tell her Josh.”
“What…oh (?), Ohh… yeah nothing’s going on” Josh says suspiciously.
If you’re wondering what’s going on its Lily’s birthday.
Julie and Josh are arguing because they’ve forgot the cake for Lily’s birthday.
“I know something’s going on between them two” Lily mutters to herself walking off
“Josh! You were supposed to get the cake!” Julie whispers angrily
“No you were! I was meant to get the present, “Josh replies.
“Fine we’ll both go,"Julie whispers with a frown.
Julie and Josh went up to town and got the cake. They had ten minutes until the party.
They managed to get back in time for the party with 5 minute left. Lily was coming in about 3 minutes and the guest had already started coming.
A minute before Lily came they put the cake on the table and hid.
As Lily came in and put her coat away everyone all jumped up and shouted
“SURPRISE!”
Lily was crying with joy and thanked everyone…

My Cornwall Diary

By Grace Colabella

2010
Day 1:
It is bright and sunny, and a little bit chilly. We are getting ready to go to the beach, along a path. It will take about 10-15 minutes.
10:15- Yes! We are going now!

5:30- We just got back from Mawgan Porth Beach, I can’t wait to go tomorrow!
I had the best time ever!
I was throwing the ball across the river for my dog Murphy to catch! But we forgot to bring all the stuff that we needed, as we were only meant to be going for a walk!
It was so cold even my dog was shivering!
So my dad had a bright idea to take us for a walk up a cliff! It was FREEZING!
The wind was really strong, and to make matters worse a MASSIVE spider crawled over my foot, and made me scream!
But it was worth it!
We had burgers for lunch on the beach, and when we got back to the caravan we had stir-fry for tea!

Day two:
It’s going to be 19 degrees today, so we are going to go to the beach all day. This morning, I woke up at 8:00 and had co-co pops for breakfast.
I’ve just got ready and brushed my teeth, but my little sister Eve, hasn’t even got dressed yet!
10:30am- We are ready to go to the beach now!
This time we are actually bringing  all the things we need, chairs, buckets and spades, and a picnic!

5:45- We are back from the beach. My sister (age 7) made three new friends at the beach, Naomi (6) and Grace and Amelia 4 year old twins.
We took our dog Murphy to the sea, and the water was over my little sisters knees!

I got very wet (but not as wet as yesterday!) because I was running through the river on the beach, and wading through knee length water. We are having spaghetti for tea.
I am going to finish reading my book “Candyfloss” by Jaqueline Wilson.

Day 3:
MORNING.

I woke up way before my sister Eve today, and I went into the lounge in the caravan, to watch TV with my mom and dad.
When Eve finally woke up, we had breakfast.
I had a sausage sandwich, so did my sister, my dad had a bacon sandwich and my mom had a sausage and bacon sandwich. (my dog had a sausage!)
10:30- We are going to the beach again today, (YAY!) I’m going in the river again today, but I have to rub my sun cream in properly today, as my shoulders and the back of my neck got sunburned.
There are even fingerprints on my shoulder, because I didn’t rub in my sun cream properly.

After the beach:
5:18pm- I had a great day at the beach today, me, Eve, mom, dad and Murphy my dog, went down to the Rock pools, and I spotted a tiny crab, and then a big red crab.

We are going home now.

The night in the mansion

By Asha Dhillon

On a winters day my Mum and Dad couldn’t decide what to do and my little brother Marty said we should got to the mansion. So we packed some food and went in the car.
The crooked door, towering above us all, creaked repeatedly. The windows were smashed and broken. We went in and this man gave us our tickets. I could hear all the eerie noises around us.
I had found myself lost; because it was dark I went the total opposite way to my parents. I was walking, down the corridors gazing at all of the pictures. Suddenly I thought I saw a glimpse of one of the eyes move on the pictures. I saw darting shapes bouncing off the walls.
The noises got louder and louder, as I carried on walking, the floorboards creaked beneath me. In the distance I could make out a black shadow…

The House on the edge of Park Street

By Kiran Dhillon

By, the way, this is a true story. It happened about five years ago and this is how it all starts. A 12 year old boy called Callum was walking with his friend Alex. They had just been walking back from school, and were heading towards the Woodland Park to play football. The park was unusually quiet and they realised that they were the only people there. They both decided to save the game for another time, as it was getting dark.
Something stopped them in their tracks. There, before them stood the House of Bromley. The house had been very rarely spoken about by people because of it’s dark secrets. There had been people who had gone into the house and then were never seen again. Callum began to edge towards the crooked, bark door. He knew he wanted to go back but the house intrigued him. “What do you think you’re doing?,” said Alex who was just watching his friend.
“I’m going to go and see what it’s like,” and with that he jolted the door handle and waited for it to open. It was locked. Then, suddenly the door creaked open almost inviting them in.
Callum stepped into the dark followed by Alex who was shaking all over. They were now in the narrow corridor leading to different rooms and passageways. “Alex, this is…..” Alex was no longer there. Callum called his name several times, but there was no answer. There was a dark shape approaching in the background and there were footsteps pounding on the wooden floor. Callum quickly turned round, to find Alex in rage. He pointed a sharp dagger towards Callum’s throat and lunged forward.

The Dark Night

By Peter Ball

In the dark night,
Shadows pass over the ground,
Darkness is there all around,

It seeks out people in the night
It stalks them with a supernatural sight,
People speak of its great power,
Its power grows with each separate hour,

During the dark night strange things happen
People disappear into the darkness,
Everyone knows what the secrets are,
Except for you,
& it will take you far,

The rest of us run & hide,
For it will take us on a dreadful ride,
One of our fears,
One of our wishes
One of what we wish to hide,
From the world…
